Meaning of 21st Century Pharisees by Mudhoney (the story behind)

"21st Century Pharisees" is a song by the American grunge band Mudhoney. The song explores the theme of hypocrisy and false piety in modern society, drawing parallels to the Pharisees, a group of religious leaders in biblical times known for their outward displays of religious devotion. The lyrics criticize those who claim to be righteous and moral, but actually engage in deceitful and self-serving behaviors. The 21st century setting highlights the relevance of this issue in contemporary times. Mudhoney uses their trademark distorted guitars and aggressive sound to emphasize the frustration and anger towards these modern-day Pharisees.
